What we collect

  • Your account: your email, your display name and, if you set one, a securely hashed (never plain-text) version of your password. You can also sign in with a one-time code we email you, with no password at all.
  • Game results: if you're logged in, your score and rank for each game you play, plus whatever event time/location/Facebook link the host attached to that session.
  • Feedback: whatever you type into the feedback widget, plus the page you were on when you sent it, and your name if you were logged in.
  • Team name, avatar and leaderboard: if you set a team name or a picture, they are saved on your account and shown next to your scores. Only accounts that have confirmed their email with a code appear on the public leaderboard, which shows your team name, your avatar and a partly hidden version of your email (for example "sa***@example.com"). Manage or change them any time on the Your team page.
  • Guest play: if you play without logging in, a random identifier plus whatever name/team/avatar you used is remembered in your browser's local storage for about 30 days, so you don't have to retype it next time. This never leaves your browser or reaches our server as a cookie - clearing your browser's site data removes it immediately.

How it's used

To run the game (show your name/score on-screen), to build the leaderboard, to let hosts follow up on feedback, and - only if something breaks - to include relevant details in an internal error report sent to the site operator via email.

Third parties

  • Facebook - only if you choose to use the "Share on Facebook" button (which uses Facebook's own share dialog and doesn't send us anything extra).
  • Our email provider (currently Gmail) - to send error alerts, feedback notifications, and the one-time codes for signing in or confirming your email.
  • YouTube - some questions show a short clip on the host's screen, loaded from YouTube's own player. Players' phones never load it.
  • Spotify - a host can connect their own Spotify Premium account so a question's song plays through their speakers. It uses only the host's account; no player data is sent to Spotify.
  • Open Trivia Database (opentdb.com) - the editor can import questions from it (currently switched off); no player data is ever sent there.

Cookies

A login session cookie, set only if you log in (with a password or an emailed code), so you don't have to log in again on every page - plus a short-lived (one hour) cookie set only while you are asking for a sign-in code, so the code only works in the browser that requested it.

Your data, your control

If you're logged in, visit Your Data to see what's stored about you and delete it. This covers your tracked game results and feedback submissions. Your team name, avatar and confirmed email are managed on the Your team page. Quizzes you create are not personal data about you - once saved, a quiz becomes the property of 71 Degrees, and cannot be deleted.
